My first car, a 1930 Model A Ford was purchased for $60 from a used lot in Pomona, Calif., in 1957. Everything was original including the 19-inch wire spoke wheels, four-cylinder engine, instrument panel, throttle and spark retard levers, choke control on the right-hand side at the bottom of the dashboard, brakes with adjustable rods and a rumble seat.
It was driven home by my dad, Ernie. We put brakes on it and new tires. I prepped it for painting, removing about 20 coats of paint. My dad painted it. My mother reupholstered the car. Top speed was about 62 miles per hour. I drove the car for about two years, then sold it and bought a 1949 Cadillac sedan.
