More cooling shelters open as Rogue Valley broils
More cooling shelters have opened to deal with the extreme heat that is plaguing the Rogue Valley and the Northwest this week. The Salvation Army in Medford said it is allowing the use of its main office, 304 Beatty St., as an “indoor resting area” from 1-5 p.m. through at least Wednesday. Medford also has a cooling shelter operated by ACCESS from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday at the former Kelly Shelter, 332 W. Sixth St. The shelter could be extended later this week depending on volunteer availability and the forecast, ACCESS said. In Ashland, the city has activated a cooling shelter at the Presbyterian Church, 1165 Clarke Ave. Hours are 1-8 p.m. through at least Thursday. The heat wave hit Sunday and is not expected to lift until Thursday. In Grants Pass, it hit 112 degrees Monday, which is a record for the date, according to the National Weather Service. Medford and Ashland both hit at least 109. A cooling center in Grants Pass is being hosted from 1-7 p.m. through Thursday at the Unitarian Universalist church, 129 N.W. E St. |
