Man in custody after woman fatally shot near Galice

A 41-year-old man is in custody following the fatal shooting of a woman just before 2 a.m. Friday near Stratton Creek.

Travis Vaughn Albins of Grants Pass was booked on suspicion first-degree manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the death of Julie Marie Names, 43, Oregon State Police said.

Albins drove Names to Asante Three Rivers Medical Center following the shooting. According to Josephine County Undersheriff Travis Snyder, Names and Albins were living at a camp in the area, near Galice. From court records, it appears they were longtime domestic partners.

Names was unconscious upon arrival at the hospital, and attempts to revive her were unsuccessful. Albins was arrested at the hospital following an interview with police.
