Man's body found in Rogue River last month identified

A man found dead in the Rogue River near the Debbs Potts Bridge last month has been identified, after authorities got new information on Friday.

Peter Kompaniet, 55, of Grants Pass died from drowning, according to the Deputy State Medical Examiner James Olson.

On Sept. 11 a couple walking on the bridge spotted a man’s body partially submerged in the river, just upstream from Baker Park, but for weeks there was no identification.

On Friday the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety that Kompaniet was missing, based on contact with his family. He had been in regular contact with his mother, but that contact had ended.

The Sheriff’s Office obtained more medical, dental and photo records and forwarded them to Olson, who made the positive ID.

The drowning is being ruled accidental, because there were no signs of foul play in the incident.
