CAVE JUNCTION — Authorities have issued a news bulletin confirming that a shooting in the parking lot of the Cave Junction Dairy Queen involved police and that the wounded man has died. The Josephine County Major Crime Team identified the man as 36-year-old Jeffrey Alan Burleson and said he was a fugitive from Florida. Jeffrey Alan Burleson was transported to Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass and subsequently died." Authorities did not specify why Burleson was wanted. The traffic stop stemmed from a warning by the U.S. Marshals Service to be on the lookout for him, according to the news bulletin. Federal agents, state troopers and sheriff’s deputies swarmed the area after the shooting, corresponding to witness reports that the shooting appeared to stem from a targeted traffic stop. Dan Mancuso, publisher of the Illinois Valley News, right next door to the Dairy Queen, said he heard five to seven shots. “I could hear people screaming,” he said. Afterward, a pickup truck parked in the drive-thru line of the restaurant could be seen with its passenger-side window blown out. The man who was shot was pulled out of the cab, Mancuso said. Dairy Queen assistant manager Nancy Clark said she was in the office at the time of the shooting. “It all happened very fast, and no one really knew what was going on,” she said.
